Sample route for a Self-Fly Safari – 2011
17-days
Hanks Aero Adventures
A rewarding Self-Fly Safari for pilots flying in Africa for the first time. The essence of Africa in 12 exciting bush-flying days.
The route gives you a variety of environments and game viewing experiences. First to the Kalahari desert in Botswana to meet Bushman and see desert animals; next to the game rich Okavango Delta of Botswana; then to Victoria Falls seen from the Livingstone, Zambia side; followed by the Tuli Block, a dry area known for its leopard and elephant; and finally to the Big 5 area of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. If you can afford the time, we recommend that you make a three-night stop at one of the destinations on your itinerary. Clients who have done so comment that the extra night at camp allowed them a respite from flying considerations, which otherwise can seem relentless. Every day, they’ve commented, you are either flying or planning for a flight the following day. In this itinerary we give you a 4 day stay in Johannesburg so the you can have one day to rest from the long haul flight, perhaps to recover from jet lag. There are many things to do in the Johannesburg area from visiting the Cradle of Humankind to learn about our earliest ancestors to touring SOWETO to hear about South Africa’s struggle through apartheid. All worthwhile tours.

Day 5 & 6
*HAINA SAFARI LODGE, CENTRAL KALAHARI, BOTSWANA (379 nm with 1 fuel and customs stop)
Private airstrip, 2 nights - all meals, transfers, activities.
The Kalahari Game Reserve is the second largest protected area in the world. It is a wide open, flat area with 4 major fossil river systems running through it and numerous lightly grassed pans. It is here that Mark and Delia Owens lived when they did their research on brown hyena and wrote the book Cry of the Kalahari. Accommodation is in a lovely tented lodge just outside the reserve. Your host is also a pilot and he is looking forward to welcoming you. Some of the activities will include a short presentation by the San people (bushman) on how they have survived in this harsh climate as well as walks and rides to see what the desert will show you. This is not a major animal viewing stop, but we have been told that lion are regular visitors to camp and herds of buffalo, zebra and other antelope can be seen. www.hainasafarilodge.com
Edo’s Camp is located in a 120,000 hectare game conservancy, in the western Kalahari Desert. This private sanctuary is home to six of Botswana’s endangered white rhino population, as well as numerous species of plants, birds and mammals, many unique to the region. Also resident are the true indigenous people of Southern Africa, the San, who provide a fascinating cultural perspective of traditional life. This remote camp overlooks a waterhole and accommodates guests in four two-bedded luxury tents set on decks and under thatch. Each tent is en-suite with shower, flush toilet and bath. Daily game drives provide guests the chance of viewing many species of mammal only found in this desert environment. Other fascinating activities include walks with San bushman trackers or tracking white rhino on foot. www.kerdowney.com
Or JACK’S CAMP -- MAKGADIKGADI PANS, BOTSWANA (361 nm with 1 fuel and customs stop)
The Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve – once a super lake -- represents something unlike anything you will see elsewhere (except at Namibia’s famous Etosha Pan). The Reserve is made up of two vast salt flats and surrounding grass and woodland savanna. It is not a regarded as a big game area. The area does support a large wildlife population but animal migration makes game viewing unreliable. A decision to visit the Pans should be prompted by a desire for a complete desert experience – including geology, archeology, and anthropology of the area. It is yet another face of African wilderness.
A complete desert experience and unique offering: explore the Kalahari. It’s geology and archeology, contemporary inhabitants and their dwellings, its wildlife, by day and night. By landrover and on foot. Old-school Africa tented luxury at the oasis. www.unchartedafrica.com
Or PLANET BAOBAB, GWETA, BOTSWANA (360nm to Gweta)
Gweta Airstrip,2 nights, accommodation, meals, and activities
This lodge is also located at the Makgadikgadi Pans. It has a very funky style with chalets built to resemble native homes. The first activity of the afternoon will be a bush walk and sundowner drink, followed by a dinner. You sleeping accommodation is in a Bakalanga Hut. Next day, after breakfast, you will drive to a Villlage & Cattlepost and be served a traditional Lunch. From there you continue to the Ntwetwe Pans. Hopefully you will see meerkats and hyena and perhaps some zebra and wildebeest. Part of the experience is riding on a quad bike activity. You will eat and sleep-out on a bed-roll on the pans under the stars. The next day you return to Planet Baobab for breakfast. From there you are taken to Gweta Airstrip. An incredible experience.
Day 7, 8 & 9
*SHINDE, KWARA, CAMP KANANA, VUMBURA CAMP, NXABEGA or STANLEY’S CAMP- OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA (181nm north with 1 fuel stop)
Private airstrip, 3 nights, all meals, activities, transfers.
Next, a flight to the heart of Okavango Delta in Botswana to one of the Delta’s exclusive camps. The Delta is created by a fast flowing river that gets much of its water from the rains in Angola. The river branches, slows down, and spreads over tens-of-thousands of square miles bringing life to the desert. Then it evaporates. It’s a river with no mouth. Your choice of camps. Some camps have both a water and a land experience. Others have water only when the floods come to the delta usually by May. And still others have only a land experience. Game drives in open land rovers ensure the safe sighting of predators at a discrete distance, while a game walk with a Ranger makes one feel close to the African bush. Unique to a Delta experience is being polled slowly through reeds so close as to scrape the sides of a mokoro (dug out canoe), following a path made by a grazing hippo. The water isn't deep but it's alive with creatures of all sizes. Some benign, some not. Another push of the pole and you glide into an open pool -- floating on a carpet of pastel lilies, bathed in sunshine, and silent, except for the ensemble of birds. The water is pure enough to drink. Lodge will be determined by availability and by your request. Please look at the below web sites to determine which camp looks best to you. KWARA www.kwando.com , VUMBURA PLUS AMANY OTHERS www.wilderness-safaris.com NXABEGA & SANDIBI www.ccafrica.com or SHINDE & KANANA www.kerdowney.com STANLEY’S, CHIEF’S & BAINS www.sanctuarylodges.com .

MOMBO CAMP

2 nights, all meals, some activities, transfers.
The River Club is built in a colonial, Victorian-era style with individual split level chalets built on high stilts overlooking the wide, slow flowing Zambezi. You’ll be met at the Livingstone airport and drive through town before turning west to follow the Zambezi River upstream 15 miles. There’s plenty to do but it may be best as a tranquil setting and an ideal place to relax and watch the hippos and birds that live by the river. A trip to the Falls can be arranged. Boat to islands in midstream, take a picnic, and have cocktails as the sun sets. Horseback riding. Visit the neighboring African village. Go fishing with River Club’s expert guides. Or
TULI SAFARI LODGE. It’s just a short drive from the airfield where you’ll discover a lush, serene garden setting on the north bank of the Limpopo River. An evening drive in a landrover reveals the contrasts between thick riverine growth along the river and stark rocky cliffs that give this area a hard-bitten feel.
